Rebekah Christie considers herself to be a reader. She grew up around hundreds of books, and remembers watching her mother read to her older siblings, as she continually tried to pull as many books off the shelves as she could. As a child, Rebekah remembers frequent trips to the local district library with her mother and siblings; she believes that this is where her love for reading first began. For the remainder of her childhood and well into adolescence, reading became an important part of Rebekah's day to day life. She would be read to throughout the day by whoever was available and as she got older, she would often demand to read to her babysitters, siblings, and parents. It was in this fashion that Rebekah became a reader. Reading is easy for Rebekah, simply because it's something she enjoys. She typically reads for pleasure (unless told otherwise) and that can be seen in her book selections. She tends to lean towards books and authors that are popular among young adults. A few of her favorite authors include John Green, Rainbow Rowell, and J.K Rowling (Rebekah is a proud hufflepuff). Over the summer, Rebekah completed five books (which makes 15 for the year), while working and completing swim practices. If there was ever a down moment, you would find her with a book in her hand, and she is currently enjoying Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. Within the last few years, Rebekah's reading has taken a backseat to her extracurriculars and she feels stuck in her ways, but in general, Rebekah adores reading and wishes she had more time to expand as a reader.
Rebekah also considers herself to be a writer, she learned how to write like most people do, by reading, constant practice, and a little bit of encouragement. As a child, she remembers writing notes and stories and proudly presenting them to her family. Rebekah's writing habits have decreased over the years, simply due to a lack of time. People write for multiple reasons, writing can be used to spread knowledge, express feelings, and document events or ideas. Rebekah believes that becoming a writer is a simple process. Firstly, read as much as possible. A person who constantly reads experiences various writing styles, which will help them in the long run. Secondly, Rebekah suggests to practice writing as often as possible. Constantly writing down original ideas, opinions, and beliefs will help a person not only with finding their voice, but also with writing in general. Lastly, Rebekah suggests having a third-party read an author’s work, this will help them improve their writing and fix mistakes that may have been overlooked. Rebekah often enjoys writing about significant past experiences she has had. She always brings a journal with her on mission trips, vacations, and retreats. She will very rarely write fiction (unless demanded of her), she has trouble writing down her thoughts down on paper for something that isn’t factual. Rebekah responds well to constructive criticism that’ll help her grow as a person. She appreciates compliments, but understands that she is not perfect and needs help to improve. In general, Rebekah tends to be proud of her writing, but she knows she has room to grow.
